Terra Topia Dirt Bike Club Open Letter

Greetings to all dirt bike enthusiasts.

Terra Topia wishes all our friends the very best for 2015. May this be a year packed with loads of dirt bike racing & motocross fun. With the festive season is over we are all keen to start the new dirt bike riding season with renewed spirit & energy. It’s time to say thank you for our blessings & to reflect on an interesting yet economically difficult year.

The South African dirt bike racing fraternity is controlled by two separate motorsport federations, namely Motorsport South Africa (MSA) & World Of Motorsport South Africa (WOMZA). Both offer similar championship series at all levels from social up to national events. MSA is recognised internationally by the FIM & locally by the Department Of Sports & Recreation plus SASCOC.

MSA is the descendant of the original AA Motorsport control & has many decades of history & service. WOMZA has its own international affiliations & has concluded 3 x highly successful, full seasons of dirt bike racing at all levels, introducing much hype & fanfare with new energy & the “bling” at their championship events. Similar yet different, both federations offer full administrative services which include the establishment of set rules & regulations for racing, license applications, medical accident insurance for racing plus blanket liability cover for their respective affiliated clubs.

Currently an impasse exists between the two & it doesn’t seem like they will ever reach a compromise. The net result is that the competitor numbers will remain fragmented for the foreseeable future. Each competitor will have to gather all the information before choosing the series they would like to compete in. Factors such as national & international recognition, history, costs of affiliation, cost to race, plus the seriousness of what one wants out of the sport must all be considered before selecting the federation to affiliate to. One can of course affiliate to both for plenty of race events. It is best to obtain all the information from the clubs, friends & the federations themselves before making decisions. Terra Topia remains apolitical. It is our wish that both MSA & WOMZA can somehow find a way to work together, for the sake of the sport in general.

Terra Topia is basically only 34 months old as at 1st January. We broke ground in the latter half of February 2012. We have had remarkable development of the track & overall growth in a short period of time. The club sincerely thanks all the club members that pre-funded capital projects by subscribing to our exclusive memberships. We have a few big & many smaller sponsors that have helped with capital projects during the past years in which we established ourselves as one of the country’s premier riding facilities. Our utmost gratitude to them for their sacrifice, donations & advertising spend. All are of equal importance in keeping our collective dream alive.

A special thank you goes out to Stefannuti Stocks for initially clearing the wild veld area & helping the club construct a Grand Prix style track. Their social efforts have not gone unnoticed. They have become a noticeable & well-known household brand. There are many little advertisers, personal & corporate that have greatly supported the club during the previous year & we hope will continue their partnership with Terra Topia. Another unselfish sponsor is Lani Services who initially built the start gates & continues to provide valuable steel supplies & services to the club. Without all this assistance the track would not be the premier motocross facility in the country. We had help again from UDS Civils in the form of building the Enduro X Cross course around the dirt bike MX track. A personal thank you to both Rob Bowen & Tony Riddell for all their help & positive reinforcement throughout the year, especially the cold winter mornings. Thanks to Castrol for sponsoring all the member gift packs & keeping our tractors & generator well lubricated. The club thanks all those advertisers & corporates that helped financially by either discounting their products/services, taking out membership and/or buying flag banners to help towards extending the main watering pipelines.   We trust all received fair advertising value in return.

Lastly but by no means least, we also say a big thank you to all our non-members/day visitors. The club can only survive by way of practice fees.  Without your continued & regular support the facility will surely be lost to the entire dirt bike fraternity forever. (Terra Topia is affiliated to both MSA & WOMZA. Membership to qualify for a racing license is available at R350. Club membership is now open for 2015 – support the club that gives you the ride of your life.)

Moving on; 2014 was a better year for TT with many new lessons learnt. There has fortunately been a great reduction in losses due to theft & vandalism. The club has definitely established itself as the busiest track in the country. We still have a long way to go to realise our full vision & to make Terra Topia the premier home for SA motocross. There are short & long term goals that can only be reached with outside assistance & only if many support the club in some form. On the short list is the erection of a garage & store rooms to protect our assets, followed by first class multiple ablution facilities. The general pit area will be extended & more exclusive VIP rental pits will be on offer. The VIP pit areas will be grassed & maintained to create a more pleasing experience & general atmosphere. The Club house & the other need-to-have facilities are on our long term list. Maybe we get lucky. The club is exploring all avenues to accelerate the process.

The track design has many positives with the change in elevation creating many interesting challenges not usually presented to our local riders. The sandy terrain has its benefits but unfortunately is very expensive to maintain & water. It is for this reason the club has had to increase the overall practice fees as from 1st January 2015. The cost of labour, earth moving equipment, tractors, diesel & petrol to pump the water into the tanks & then out onto the track is a very costly exercise. What must be considered & appreciated by all is the fact that Terra Topia is a long circuit with lots of space between opposing straights & other parts of the track. It is also more than twice as wide as any other track. The venue comprises of + – 17 hectares, all of which must be maintained & kept free of weeds etc. There is no power supply from Eskom, so the club has to use a big diesel generator for the borehole pumps & other services, plus petrol pumps for the watering system. This cost is EIGHT times greater than using electricity from Eskom. Our new 2015 different levels of membership offers increased discounts to members. It is now makes even more sense to subscribe. (See our detailed list of the different levels of membership available.) We will, with your continued support, continue to turn this facility into a world class venue for all to enjoy. Both Jnr & Snr tracks are an excellent challenge & are fully developed; all we need to do is add the off track facilities that will make the overall experience more pleasant for all our visitors. The club has a tall & large signpost in the middle front, behind the start gates, that will be sold off for multiple advertising. We will offer the colourful banner flags again & other pole, plus perimeter fence advertising space will also be available. Book now, WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!!!!!!

Please see our web & Facebook sites for more details, racing calendar, on-line application forms tc.

Have a super & safe year in the dirt.

Regards
